Science Education for Children Through Hands-On Learning

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Science education for children became more accessible and engaging as JCI Davao successfully conducted Sciensaya Year 2 on May 2, 2026, in Brgy. 76-A Bucana, Davao City. Through a day of hands-on learning, interactive experiments, and educational activities, the project reached more than 200 young learners, including children from the Badjao community, providing them with opportunities to explore the wonders of science beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Now on its second year, Sciensaya continues to serve as a platform that introduces children from underserved communities to the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The initiative was designed to make science education for children both accessible and enjoyable, helping young learners develop curiosity, creativity, and confidence through practical experiences.

A major driving force behind the project was the participation of volunteer students from the Association of Tomorrow’s Scientists (ATOMS) of Davao Christian High School. With passion and dedication, the student volunteers facilitated various learning stations that encouraged children to observe, experiment, and discover scientific principles through engaging activities.

Why Science Education for Children Matters in Underserved Communities

For many children living in economically challenged communities, opportunities to participate in experiential learning activities can be limited. While classroom instruction provides foundational knowledge, practical exposure often creates deeper understanding and appreciation for learning. This is why science education for children remains a vital tool in helping young learners develop critical thinking skills and a lifelong love for discovery.

Sciensaya Year 2 specifically targeted young learners in Brgy. 76-A Bucana, including members of the Badjao community. By bringing educational enrichment directly into the community, the project aimed to bridge learning gaps and provide experiences that may otherwise be inaccessible to many participants.

The initiative aligns with JCI Davao’s commitment to creating opportunities that empower young people through education. By exposing children to STEM concepts at an early age, the organization hopes to inspire future innovators, scientists, educators, and community leaders who will contribute meaningfully to society.

Science Education for Children Made Fun Through STEM Activities

Throughout the program, participants were immersed in a variety of science-based demonstrations and experiments covering chemistry, physics, and human anatomy. The activities were carefully designed to transform complex concepts into fun and interactive experiences that children could easily understand and appreciate.

Young learners eagerly participated in experiments that showcased chemical reactions, explored the principles of motion and force, and introduced them to the basic functions of the human body. Through observation, experimentation, and guided discovery, science education for children was transformed into an exciting and memorable experience.

Beyond STEM learning, the project also promoted health awareness among the participants. Representatives from Ocean Smiles Dental Clinic conducted an engaging oral health session that taught children the importance of proper dental hygiene. Through demonstrations on correct tooth-brushing techniques and discussions on oral care habits, the activity emphasized the connection between health, confidence, and overall well-being.

The combination of science learning and health education created a holistic learning environment where children were encouraged to explore, ask questions, and actively participate in their own development.

The Future of Science Education for Children in Davao City

More than simply teaching scientific concepts, Sciensaya Year 2 sought to cultivate valuable life skills among its participants. Through collaborative activities and guided learning experiences, children developed problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking skills, communication skills, and self-confidence. These competencies serve as essential foundations for future academic success and personal growth.

The enthusiasm displayed by the participants throughout the day served as a powerful reminder that every child possesses the potential to learn, discover, and succeed when given the opportunity. For many of the young learners who attended, the program offered not only knowledge but also inspiration—a chance to see science as something exciting, achievable, and relevant to their daily lives.

As JCI Davao continues expanding science education for children, the organization remains committed to creating sustainable educational opportunities that empower communities and develop future leaders. Through initiatives such as Sciensaya, JCI Davao demonstrates how volunteerism, collaboration, and innovation can create lasting positive impact.
