Davao City, April 28, 2025 – JCI Davao proudly joined top global minds in science, sustainability, and leadership during the International Conference on Emerging Technologies (ICETI-3) and the International Conference for Interdisciplinary Science and Environmental Solutions (Ecotone 1), held at the University of Mindanao, Matina Campus.

The international gathering served as Day 1 of JCI Davao’s Ecotone initiative, reinforcing the organization’s deep commitment to youth leadership and environmental education in Mindanao.

Global Voices, Local Impact

The conference featured plenary talks and knowledge-sharing from renowned experts in biodiversity, wastewater management, deep-sea research, and disaster risk reduction:

  • Dr. Chosel P. Lawagon, AVP, Institute of Natural Sciences and Innovation Studies, UM
  • Dr. Deo Florence L. Onda, Associate Dean, UP Marine Science Institute

Beyond the plenaries, participants engaged in breakout discussions and witnessed the ribbon-cutting of various sustainable environmental exhibits—further deepening awareness of pressing ecological challenges and solutions.

Youth Leadership at the Forefront

JCI Davao leaders played a key role in the event, serving as speakers and moderators, and proving that the youth of Mindanao are not only participating in climate dialogue but helping shape it.

“Leadership begins with learning. Events like Ecotone give us the space to engage with experts, ask hard questions, and apply those answers in our local communities,” said Marlon C. Suelto of JCI Davao.

This active participation highlights JCI Davao’s focus on building a new generation of leaders who are informed, empowered, and capable of driving sustainability through interdisciplinary action.

A Strong Start to Ecotone

Day 1 of the Ecotone series set the tone for a powerful week of environmental education and youth empowerment. In partnership with the University of Mindanao, the Center of Green Nanotechnology Innovations for Environmental Solutions (CGNIES), and the Institute of Biodiversity and Environment (IBE), JCI Davao affirmed its role as a regional driver of community-focused innovation.
